Three Easy Writer’s Tasks for the Holidays

The holidays can be feast or famine for writers. Hopefully you have plenty of work to take you into the following months. But if you do have some free time, by choice or not, it is a great time to gear up for the new year. So grab a cup of coffee, tea or eggnog and read on.

Task number one: The first task is to get organized. I know that I cannot write unless my writing space is clean and clear. Your space should only contain items and tools that inspire and encourage productivity. Whether you work from home or at the office, a decluttering process can help you clear your mind as well as your physical space. Click here for a great article on creating an awesome workspace.

Task number two: This task requires some thinking and discipline, but it is so worth it: Time to create new year goals. The secret to creating achievable goals is to start with a few simple steps for each goal. I like to write out what I want to achieve in the new year and a few reasonable steps for each goal. This keeps the goals from becoming overwhelming and something you file away for another time. From updating your website to writing a book, small and consistent steps will go a long way to reaching goals. Check out this article for tips on creating writing goals.

Task number three: The last task I will cover has to do with re-evaluating your writing career. Take a moment to consider if you are going in the right direction. For example, are you working on projects you really like or find interesting? What are some topics you’d love to write about? It’s also a good time to examine if you are happy working for your current employer and if you feel appreciated. If not, then consider your options. Are there jobs out there that align more with your passions or interests? Even if you can’t quit, you can always update your résumé. Click here for some résumé tips.

These are tips you can squeeze in your day and feel like you are making strides in your writing career. Do you have any tips you’d like to share? Write me and maybe I’ll include them in a future post. Happy holidays to all!

Happy writing!
